Blogs, Wikis, & Social Bookmarking Resources

blogging.jpgBlogs, wikis, and social bookmarks are all "Web 2.0" tools that educators can use in their classrooms in many different ways. Would you like your students to write for an audience? You might set up a set of classroom blogs. Would you like students to collaborate on a large-scale science project that requires them to show the steps they took to reach conclusions? Maybe a wiki is the best choice. What if you ask students to write a research paper for economics class and share their online sources with you and others? Consider setting up Delicious or Diigo accounts for your class.
A common question associated with blogs, wikis, and social bookmarking projects is: "how do I grade this?" "Teacher-preneur" Kathy Schrock has a webpage full of rubrics to help. Additionally, RubiStar features many pre-made rubrics submitted by fellow educators.

Blogging Tools:

Edublogs - As the site says, “By teachers, for teachers, Edublogs hosts hundreds of thousands of blogs for teachers, students, researchers, professors, librarians, coordinators, institutions and administrators.”
The JCHS Media Center provides an Edublogs tutorial for the absolute beginner: . The document will teach you how to set up a classroom blog on Edublogs and create simple posts. Sue Waters’ at The Edublogger has an excellent post titled Tips On Blogging With Students. It features advice from teachers who have successfully done so for years.

"Student Blogging Guidelines" is a great post providing ideas for rules and expectations to provide students before blogging as a class.

Blogs as Web-Based Portfolios - An excellent workshop from TheThinkingStick.com. This site explains how teachers can use blogs as a summative assessment in their classrooms. Available as a PDF file.

Wiki Tools:

Wikispaces for Educators - Makes wikis easy to use for everyone, not just technical users. Offers free sign-ups for teachers. Provides a simple interface, a visual page editor, and a focus on community collaboration.

Educational Wikis features a large directory of wikis to explore if you would like to see different ways the tool is being used around the nation.

The Innovative Educator Blog offers the post "8 Ways To Use A School Wiki to Increase Communication, Collaboration, and Enrich Instruction."

Social Bookmarking Tools:

Delicious is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks. Delicious uses a non-hierarchical classification system in which users can tag each of their bookmarks with freely chosen index terms (generating a kind of folksonomy).

Diigo is a social bookmarking website which allows signed-up users to bookmark and tag web-pages. Additionally, it allows users to highlight any part of a webpage and attach sticky notes to specific highlights or to a whole page. These annotations can be kept private, shared with a group within Diigo or a special link forwarded to someone else.
